Standard 8

Educators contribute to the profession.

Rationale #1: Talking Tables Info Session
Location: UFV's TEP room
Audience: student teachers

Since I felt that the Talking Tables program can be very vital to primary teachers, I worked with two other classmates(Heather Curle and Trieneke Penner) to pass on the value of the program. This artifact is filed under Standard 8 because I provided and contributed to the profession by teaching other student teachers how this program can be implemented in the classroom. The three of us put together a mini lesson using the program materials to help others see how the program works. As the years go by, more and more ESL students become a part of the classroom and this is a program that can help the students with their oral language. We introduced the background of the program to the attendants, then presented them with a lesson from one of the six units (that is done in the program), and then discussed how students would be assessed. The attendants all receive a copy of the information provided as well as a copy of a lesson that can be done with their students.

I found it very rewarding and educational for myself to be giving back to others. I look forward to having a significant role in giving back to other educators in the profession. This was the start of my many years of contribution. By presenting the program to others, it allowed me to gain a better understanding on what I knew about it and what I could possibly research more. There are so many techniques and programs that can be beneficial in the classroom and a great way to learn about it is by those who have used them. Presenting this program to others has only encouraged me to research other programs and strategies so I can provide other educators with the knowledge I have gathered.

Rationale #2: UFV's Teacher Education Program Information Session
Location: UFV, Chilliwack Campus
Date: March 4, 2009
Audience: Education 300 students

On March 4, 2009, I joined two other student teachers in presenting information about the Teacher Education Program to future student teacher applicants. The presentation was done as an informal information session. This artifact is filed under standard 8 because I was providing support and key ideas for preparation on entering the teaching profession. The education 300 students were provided with the opportunity of asking the three of us any questions they wanted to about the program. As current student teachers, we answered the questions to the best of our ability and to our own personal experiences. There were questions in which could only be specifically answered by those experiencing certain situations, like working during the program or having children. Out of the three of us that were presenting, I was the only one who could speak on this question about working during the whole program and I made it as applicable to their own experiences as possible. My goal of doing this presentation was to help prepare and inform future TEP applicants of what to expect from the program. I wanted to express my gratitude and satisfaction with the program up to that point. I wanted to share my experiences with others who have the same goal in mind.

By conducting this information session, it allowed me to gain confidence in sharing with other potential co-workers on the teaching profession. It allowed me to give back to the profession and have fun doing it. I really enjoyed being able to help others with their concerns and questions. I found it very rewarding that I was somewhat able to put a few minds at ease. This has also helped to encourage me to provide many others with various information sessions for the future on various ideas.
