Standard 2

Educators are role models who act ethically and honestly.

Rationale#1: Developing Professional Identity as an Educator
Date: August 7,2008
Location: Chilliwack TEP room
Speaker: Laura Bickerton, BCCT representative

Laura Bickerton presented to all the 2008/09 TEP students a great amount of information on what is expected of teachers. This presentation is filed under Standard 2 because it provided a means of knowledge on the laws and regulations that will bind us to ensuring we act as professionals and understand the importance of our role in society. Laura provided us with the expectations and boundaries we as future teachers need to follow in our career when it comes to our relationships with students, the students' parents/guardians and our colleagues. The amount of rules and regulations can be frightening and overwhelming to hear as a future educator, but I found it quite beneficial to be able to gain the understanding on what I will have to follow to protect the well-being of my students as well as myself. If regulations such as the ones developed by the BCCT were not developed, there could be many issues arising in the teaching profession that would be harmful for everyone. Laura helped me to realize the support that is in place for teachers and the consequences for breaking the rules and pushing the boundaries.

This workshop will help with my growth in developing a professional identity as an educator to ensure that I am doing my job properly and respectfully. I have completed my school experiences, short practicum and long with these rules and regulations kept in mind. I have been ethical and honest in any situation I encountered in my school experiences as well as when building relationships with my teacher mentor, students, students' parents and the school staff. By knowing the expectations right from the beginning, it has given me the opportunity to truly understand and value the importance of being a role model that acts professional in an ethical and honest manner. Having a long teaching career is extremely important to me and making sure that I model professional competence will only help ensure that it will happen.

Rationale #2: Professional Boundaries
Date: September 22,2008
Location: Chilliwack TEP room
Presenter: Joe Ogmundson

This workshop was based on the obstacles teachers may be challenged with when developing and maintaining professional relationship boundaries in the teaching profession. This presentation is filed under Standard 2 because it provided adequate knowledge on how to be role models and maintain professional boundaries at the same time. The presentation was presented by Joe Ogmundson, the vice president of the Chilliwack Teacher's Association and a school counselor at Chilliwack Senior Secondary. He presented many rich scenarios that allowed us to explore and use practical application on how we would handle various events if we were confronted with them. Joe presented how to maintain professional boundaries for all the scenarios and helpful tips on how to deal with these situations. The key components that Joe presented were that teaching is a fiduciary contract and that there are types of warranties that govern that contract, considered issues common to teaching and working with minors, identified the limits of confidentiality for different scenarios, explored issues in social relationships, reviewed guidelines for self-disclosure and examined the ramifications of excessive self-disclosure, looked at common boundary violation precursors which can lead to inappropriate intimacy with students, examined our obligations to teachers who may have overstepped the boundaries and examined the relationship a teacher has to the professional umbrella organizations.

The practical exploration of the scenarios helped me gain a better idea and understanding on how I would deal with particular situations. It made me more aware of the challenging relationships I may be exposed to in the profession. Joe's presentation prepared me even more for my future teaching career on how to interact with professionalism in any pressing situation. Having the opportunity to learn about the boundaries that I will face as a future teacher has only improved and developed my confidence in dealing with these challenges that may arise. This presentation has helped me develop some skills that I will be able to use in my future teaching career.
